Cross-slab in Treanmanagh

In the NE corner of a children's burial ground (KE064-010----). An upright sandstone slab (H 0.4m; Wth 0.15m; T 0.12m), orientated N-S, with a plain equal-armed cross-in-circle (D 3-4mm) inscribed on the lower half of the exposed surface of its E face. The arms of the cross terminate at the edge of the circle and the circle occupies almost the full width of the stone. This cross-slab was uncovered during a local graveyard clean-up scheme in the late 1990s. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Kerry. Date likely to the early medieval period (5th–10th century AD), reflecting Christian symbolism. The cross-in-circle may have served as a memorial or boundary marker, possibly associated with the nearby children's burial ground.
