Cross-slab in Knock (inishbofin Par.)

Located in the graveyard (GA009D014002-) associated with the early monastic foundation at the SE end of Inisbofin Island. This cross-slab was recorded by Higgins (1987, ii, 394, no. 114) who described it as an irregular slab of gneisse or schist (H 0.38m; Wth 0.26m; T 0.04-0.06m) set deeply in the ground with its broad faces orientated to the E and W. A concave notch is visible on each side of the slab and above these the stone has been worked to give a roughly rounded head. This slab is similar to another one in the graveyard – see GA009D007-. Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with the monastic settlement on Inisbofin Island. It may have served as a gravestone or memorial, reflecting Christian symbolism introduced to the area during that time.
