Site of Guairims Castle — Report the wrong picture

Guairims Castle may never have existed beyond a whispered tradition already fading in 1839. The harbour side of Inishbofin gives no stone, trench or broken wall back, only seawater and the memory of a name. What is certain is that people once pointed to that shore and believed a castle belonged there.

Close to seashore on N side of the harbour of Inishbofin. The OS 6-inch maps record it as the site of a castle but the OS Letters fail to mention it at all. According to Westropp (1911, 68) 'only a tradition of the site [existed] in 1839'. In the absence of surface features and documentary evidence, its existence and classification must remain uncertain.
