Cross-slab in Killeigh

Early Christian ringed cross-slab now located inside the chapter house of the Franciscan friary (OF025-017001-) where it can be seen lying up against the inner face of the W wall in the SW corner of the vaulted building (Fitzpatrick and O'Brien 1998, 27-30). Described by Fitzpatrick as an 'Early Christian thistle-cross variant sandstone cross-slab (0.56m x 0.64m x 0.10m). The raised circle enclosing the cross is 0.37m in diameter. Each arm of the cross is 0.11m long with slightly expanded terminals. The four spandrels of the cross are pitted (Fitzpatrick 1992). Dateable to the 9th to 11th centuries, this cross-slab reflects the influence of Early Christian monastic tradition in the region. It likely served a liturgical or commemorative function, possibly marking a burial or sacred space.
