Cross-slab in Inishmurray

Located in Templenaman graveyard (SL001-002007-), 8m N of Crossatemple leacht (SL001-003001-). Slab (H: <0.6 m, W: 0.311 m, Th: 0.19 m) with incised cross of which the left arm and part of the shaft are lost. The vertical arms are of equal length and the upper arms have wide terminals within which are false relief triangles. The uppermost of these features a small depression. There are hints of the small expansion at the crossing depicted in Wakeman’s illustration (1886, 318, fig. 76; 1893, 143, fig. 76). This is a National Monument (no. 117) in state ownership. Probably dates to the early Christian period (5th–10th century). Likely used as a grave marker or waymark, reflecting Christian symbolism in a monastic or burial context.
