Inishcaltra is a small island off County Clare where a twelfth-century cross-slab still stands inside a saint’s graveyard. The stone measures about five feet five inches long and eighteen inches wide, carrying a Latin cross whose base bends outward to touch both edges. People may have laid the dead beside that mark, trusting the island’s holiness to hold them through storms and forgetfulness.

Situated in the E half of the ‘Saint’s graveyard’ (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra (11.88m from the N wall and 6.05m from the E wall). Noted by Macalister (1916-17, 157, no. 54) as of ‘twelfth-century type’ and described as a slab measuring 5ft 5in (1.65m) by 1ft 8in (0.5m), with a Latin cross with hollowed angles, at the base of the shaft the lines bend outward at 90 degrees and extend to the edges of the slab.
