What is recorded here

Inishcaltra is a small Clare island where a broken cross-slab still stands beside an old church wall. The lost bottom carries part of the cross into memory, while the remaining stone marks a graveyard shaped by faith and tide.

Situated close to Teampul na bhFear nGonta (CL029-009015-) in the ‘Saint’s graveyard’ (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra 18.9m from the S wall and 10.6m from the W wall. A cross-slab noted by Macalister (1916-17, 154, no. 37) as a ‘twelfth-century type’ and described as ‘a slab, now 3ft 5in (1.04m) by 1ft 7in (0.48m), but the bottom is broken away, carrying with it the lower end of the cross.’ Macalister describes this slab as ‘similar to the preceding’ which is no. 36 (CL029-009072-) which has a plain Latin cross of two lines. Probably dating to the early medieval period (5th–10th century), the cross-slab likely had a Christian ritual or commemorative function, possibly associated with a monastic or ecclesiastical site linked to local saints. Such stones often marked burials or served as foci for prayer and pilgrimage.
