Inishcaltra is a small Clare island where a recumbent cross-slab still lies in the western half of the saint’s graveyard, not far from the south and west walls. The stone is about six feet long and fourteen inches wide, worn smooth but still marked with a double-lined Latin cross, hollowed angles, squares, smaller crosses and an interlacing band. It belongs to the twelfth-century type, old enough to have watched boats arrive, prayers be spoken and graves be forgotten.

A recumbent cross-slab situated in the W half of the ‘Saint’s graveyard’ (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra (17.3m from the S wall and 2.7m from the W wall). Noted by Macalister (1916-17, 160-61, no. 77) as of ‘twelfth-century type’ and described as a slab measuring 6ft (1.8m) by 1ft 2in (0.35m) bearing a much-worn pattern. The base of the stone and area to the right of the shaft are covered with an ornament of squares and crosses and the left side has an interlacing pattern. A recumbent cross-slab dating likely to the 12th century, associated with a Christian burial or memorial site. Such stones often marked the graves of important figures or served as ecclesiastical markers linked to early monastic activity on the island.
