Inishcaltra is a small Clare island where a saint’s graveyard still keeps its edge. At its centre lies a worn cross-slab, imperfect at both ends but unmistakable in its purpose. The island has survived flooding, forgetting and the ordinary pressure of time because people kept returning to remember what it holds.

Situated towards the centre of the ‘Saint’s graveyard’ (CL029-009030-) on Inis Cealtra (18.5m from the S wall and 9.9m from the W wall). Noted by Macalister (1916-17, 154, no. 33) as of ‘twelfth-century type’ and described as ‘a slab, 3ft 1in (0.93m) by 1ft 2in (0.35m), apparently imperfect at both ends’ with a plain Latin cross of two lines.
