What is recorded here

Fragmentary sandstone cross-slab (dims. 0.2m x 0.18m x 0.05m) unearthed by Kendrick during his excavations in 1935 at Gallen priory. Described by Macalister as 'terminal of cross-arm with interlacing patttern' (Macalister 1949, 75). This slab bears an inscription O~[--, which can be expanded to O[ROIT DO-- (Macalister 1949, 75). According to Macalister `This [inscription] appears to be complete, except for a slight damage to the M: the names, however, may be abbreviated' (Macalister 1949, 75. Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian symbolism and possibly linked to the monastic activity at Gallen priory. The interlacing pattern may reflect Insular artistic traditions.
