Cross-slab in Baltimore

Upright round headed stone (H 0.58m; 0.4m x 0.2m) in Tullagh church (CO150-038002-). Inscribed decorations. On W face, double-armed Latin cross (H 0.49m; Wth 0.16m); arms 0.18m apart. Expanded terminals. Bell-shaped outline at bottom of shaft. Stem extends beneath ground surface. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cork. Probably dates to the early medieval period, associated with Christian worship or commemoration. The double-armed cross may reflect a regional variation of Insular Christian symbolism.
