Cross-slab in Aughrim

Cross-slab

What is recorded here

On a low drumlin overlooking Lough Nahircha c. 500m to ESE. An early Christian foundation (RO017-084001-) (burned in 790 AD) still in use in the medieval period (burned again in 1398 AD). A fragment of a cross inscribed grave slab is mounted on the inner face of the reconstructed E gable of the church. This is Old Red Sandstone (dims. 0.3m x 0.2m) with a ringed cross and a radial inscription in the spandrels '.N GAL.' and dating between 8th C and 10th C (Herity et al. 1997, 114). Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 24 August 2010
Probably dating to the early Christian period (5th–9th century), the cross-slab may have been associated with the nearby monastic site and could have served as a memorial, waymarker, or liturgical object. Its reuse or survival into the medieval period suggests ongoing religious or symbolic significance.
