Cross (present location) in Carrigafreaghane

This stone cross (L 0.48m; Wth 0.25m; T 0.05m) was found in the main ecclesiastical complex on the NE peak of Sceilg Mhichíl and is now in the care of the OPW (National Monuments Depot, Killarney). It has two short rounded arms, each with a rounded angle underneath. The shaft narrows towards the lower end and the head is missing. The cross from Carrigafreaghane, now in the National Monuments Depot, Killarney, was likely built in the 7th to 9th century and is associated with the early Christian monastic site of Sceilg Mhichíl. It is a small, plain high cross, significant as a remnant of the ecclesiastical activity on the island.
