Cross-inscribed stone in Kilmolash

Cross-inscribed stone

What is recorded here

A stone (L 1.24m; visible Wth 0.6m; T 0.15m) is set as a lintel over the embrasure of the N window in the chancel of Kilmolash church (WA029-017001-). It has a cross (dims. 41cm x 33cm) in false relief with rounded angles. Buckley (1899, 47) suggests that it might have formed the lintel of a doorway to the original church, while Power (1908B, 5) regards this as part of the original altar. Buckley, M. J. C. (1899) Ecclesiological gleanings and jottings in Waterford and elsewhere. (continued) WAJ vol. 5, 44-8. Power, Rev. P. (1908b) Dromore to Lismore – with notes on the antiquities to be visited on the society’s annual excurstion, WAJ 12, 1-16. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 10 November 2011
Probably dating to the early medieval period, this cross-inscribed stone likely served a liturgical or commemorative function, reflecting Christian symbolism and craftsmanship of the time. Its placement within the church suggests it may have been repurposed during later building works.
