Cross-inscribed stone in Doire Leathan

Cross-inscribed stone

What is recorded here

No. That is not a cross-inscribed stone in Doire Leathan. It is a different place, and it must use the facts already supplied for that place.
Garrynakilla burial ground (DG096-007001-) is an oval-shaped area 21.7m x 17.3m with an entrance gap through the stone wall to the ENE. The interior is flat and has been ploughed. A local tradition records a cross-inscribed stone in the NNW part of the graveyard but it no longer survives. There is, however, a natural erratic in this part of the graveyard. The above description was derived from the 'Archaeological Survey of County Donegal. A description of the field antiquities of the County from the Mesolithic Period to the 17th century.' Compiled by: Brian Lacey with Eamon Cody, Claire Cotter, Judy Cuppage, Noel Dunne, Vincent Hurley, Celie O'Rahilly, Paul Walsh and Seán Ó Nualláin (Lifford: Donegal County Council, 1983). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated. Date of upload: 22 September 2008
Probably dating to the early Christian period (5th–9th century AD), the cross-inscribed stone likely served a religious or commemorative function, possibly marking a burial or sacred site. Local tradition may reflect later folklore associated with the cross or the surrounding burial ground.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
