Cross in Sceilg Mhichíl

Cross

What is recorded here

Sixty-three centimetres of broken stone still stands at the edge of the Monks' Graveyard in Sceilg Mhichíl, its arms lost but its base intact. The slab narrows toward the ground like a finger pressing into earth, marking where devotion met death on the Iveragh peninsula. Whoever set it there understood that even a fractured cross could hold the weight of a prayer.
'This rough slab, which narrows in width towards its base, forms part of the SW side of the Monks' Graveyard [KE104A001046-]. H: 0.63m. W: 0.3m. T: 0.06m' (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 289, no. 948 (53)). The arms of this possible cross are broken. The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 948. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Revised by: Caimin O'Brien Date of revised upload: 9 March 2022
