Cross in Sceilg Mhichíl

This stone cross (L 0.21m; Wth 0.12m; T 0.03m) was found in the main ecclesiastical complex on the NE peak of Sceilg Mhichíl and is now in the care of the OPW (National Monuments Depot, Killarney). It has two short arms, each with a slightly rounded angle underneath. The roughly rectangular shaft is intact and the head is missing. This cross has been allocated the SMR number KE066-240---- at its present location in the OPW Depot, Killarney. The cross from Sceilg Mhichíl was likely built by early Christian monks in the 7th or 8th century and is associated with the monastic site dedicated to St Michael. Its small size and two short arms reflect a distinctive early Irish high cross style, and the site itself is of significant historical and religious importance as an early Christian settlement.
