What is recorded here
Half a metre tall, forty centimetres wide, and three centimetres thick, the cross-shaped slab leans into the southwest wall of the Monks' Graveyard in Sceilg Mhichíl. It is small enough to hide beneath a coat sleeve yet heavy enough to mark death itself. Whoever set it there did not build a monument for tourists; they built a boundary for the dead. The stones around it have probably forgotten the names of every monk who slept beneath them, but the cross still points upward like a finger refusing to let go.
Cross described in 1996 as follows; 'This roughly cross-shaped slab forms part of the SW side of the Monks' Graveyard [KE104A001046-]. H: 0.46m. W: 0.4m. T: 0.03m' (O'Sullivan and Sheehan 1996, 289, no. 948 (49))
The above description is derived from A. O'Sullivan and J. Sheehan (compilers), 'The Iveragh peninsula: an archaeological survey of South Kerry'. Cork University Press (1996), no. 948. In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
