Cross in Lorum

Cross

What is recorded here

Lorum is a quiet Carlow field where a broken cross still stands beside church ruins. The surviving base measures seventy-six centimetres long, forty-five centimetres wide and forty-five centimetres high. Its shaft has vanished, perhaps snapped by weather, removed by people or swallowed by the earth. The absence does not weaken the place; it completes the story.
Situated on high ground with commanding views of the surrounding countryside. Base of high cross (dims. L 0.76m x Wth 0.45m x H 0.45m) located S of church ruins (CW019-011001-) in SW quadrant of graveyard (CW019-011004-) close to boundary wall of graveyard (Anon 1888-91, 68-9). No shaft of cross visible in graveyard. Compiled by: Anna Brindley Revised by: Caimin O’Brien Date of revised upload: 17 August 2015
