What is recorded here

Located on a broad, low hill. A granite latin cross (H 0.54m; Wth of arms 0.53m), now in the County Wexford Museum, Enniscorthy (WX020-031012-), was located on top of the road bank on the NW side of the Kilmuckeridge to Courtown road (R742) until sometime after 1948. It has an inscribed circle, possibly with a Chi Rho, at the crux. Above this on the same face is an inscribed Latin cross. There is a raised rectangle on the other face. (Ranson 1945, 53; 1948, 101-02) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Wexford' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1996).

Cross in RaheenluskCross · 229 yd

Explorer Tom Cross in Raheenlusk probably orders double chips with extra salt when it isn't being moved to museums. It's got a bit of a nomadic streak and loves a good change of scenery. Bring the dog, because it will definitely have strong opinions on this one.

farm house1538 yd

Explorer Tom Farm house in Coolroe holds a fake world record for being the most stubbornly square building in County Wexford. It’s got mud on its nose and a roof that looks like it’s sleeping. Salute it from the road before it starts bragging about its windbreak.

Site of Morris CastleCastle, unclassified · 1647 yd

Explorer Tom Site of Morris Castle would post a photo of a single stone and caption it 'vibes only', expecting the whole world to call it an architectural masterpiece overnight. It’s been waiting for someone to notice its steep slope looks cool in the sunset, but everyone just walks past without even checking their phone first. Ideal for a moody photo you'll pretend wasn't posed.

Ballywater HouseFarm house · 1696 yd

Explorer Tom Ballywater House in Ballywater Lower is a farm house that has been refronted so many times it’s like changing the face of an old friend. It’s got that dark slatey look that says 'I have seen things,' while standing quietly in the later nineteenth-century countryside. If you see a crow looking at you, it’s probably judging your outfit.

Castle Anneslwy (in ruins)Bawn · 1.4 mi

Explorer Tom Castle Anneslwy survived a bet lost by a priest who swore on his life that the tower was square, which it decidedly is not. It’s just one D-shaped mural tower left standing, looking slightly embarrassed about its odd shape. Tell me if the gossip I made up is true.

Morriscastle BeachBeach / strand · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom Morriscastle Beach offers a shortcut that is actually a long, sandy detour through dunes that swallow your boots whole. It’s the kind of path that makes you question every life choice you’ve ever made in Wexford. Best enjoyed with a bag of chips and no plans.

Shrule Deer FarmHeritage attraction · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom Shrule Deer Farm would post on social media: 'Just vibing with 2,500 antlers, who needs a gym?' They’re all just standing there looking confused about why humans need fences when they could just wander off. Make a wish, it's had centuries of practice.

The Cahore Polders and DunesNature reserve · 1.7 mi

Explorer Tom The Cahore Polders and Dunes think the road leading to it is nothing but a long, painful joke that the council told us. The sand dunes are just waiting for you to slip so they can laugh at your expense. Best visited with a curious kid and no timetable.

Newtown BeachBeach / strand · 2.8 mi

Explorer Tom Newtown Beach had a fox take charge of the entire area last summer and held court on the rocks. It inspected every sunbather and seemed particularly unimpressed with my attempt at a perfect tan, barking orders I couldn't understand. Take a breath of that air, it's older than your car.

Wexford - TexasMemorial · 3.1 mi

Explorer Tom Wexford - Texas is a memorial that thinks it’s got a direct phone line to the Lone Star State. A poet fell in a ditch nearby and claimed he was just checking the signal strength, which we all know is a lie. Bring a pen pal, they'll be jealous.

Fontainebleau service tree3.7 mi

Explorer Tom Fontainebleau service tree has the seagulls gossiping about its strange French connection like it’s local news. It just stands there, letting them talk while it enjoys the view. Stand still and listen, the wind tells it better than me.

Glascarrig AbbeyArchaeological place · 4.1 mi

Explorer Tom Glascarrig Abbey in County Wexford is basically a cowshed with ambition, hiding its monastic past behind a very unimpressive twelve-point-seven-metre wall that looks like it gave up halfway through the century. If it could talk to its younger self, it would just say 'stop trying so hard, you look like a farm annex now.' Go in good boots and better humour.
