Inishcaltra is a small Clare island where St. Caimin’s church still stands beside a bare cross base, its rectangular socket waiting for a lost shaft. The sandstone block is short, wide and deeply striated, more like a chair for wood than a monument in itself. It moved from the nave wall to an OPW chalet, yet the empty joint still points upward, remembering the shape that once completed it.

This stone was noted by Macalister (1916-17, 145, no. 2) at the N wall of the nave of St. Caimin’s church (CL029-009011-) on Inis Cealtra; it is now located in the OPW chalet on the island. The base of a cross comprising a tall sandstone block (H 0.31m; Wth 0.24m) with deep natural striations. A wide, deep, rectangular socket (0.16m x 0.09m) is centrally placed.
