Inishcaltra is a small Clare island where St. Caimin’s church still stands beside a saved cross base. The sandstone block once held a taller cross, and its shallow socket still points to the missing part. Incised marks on every face suggest the stone was made to be seen, touched and remembered. It moved from the church wall to the island chalet, but it remains a marker of the place rather than an ordinary rock.

This stone was noted by Macalister (1916-17, 145, no. 3) at the N wall of the nave of St. Caimin’s church (CL029-009011-) on Inis Cealtra; it is now located in the OPW chalet on the island. The base of a cross comprising a sandstone block (H 0.23m; Wth 0.37m at the base narrowing to 0.28m at the top) with a rectangular socket (0.2m x 0.1m; D 0.06m).
