Cross in Donagh

A stepped-pyramidal cross-base (dims of base 0.7m; x 0.51m; dims of top 0.45m x 0.33m; H 0.42m;) with a water filled socket (dims 0.33m x 0.22m; D 0.17m) is known locally as the 'Wart Well', and is in the SSE quadrant of Donagh graveyard (MO007-007004-). It is just E of the graveslab (MO007-007007-) of Phelim Mac Kenna. This cross-base was probably the base of the Donagh Cross (MO007-007003-) in the NW quadrant of the graveyard. According to local tradition the water in the cross-base never dries up and cures warts. In order to obtain a cure people come to the wart well with a coin and asks the well to cure the wart. The coin is then placed on the wart. This procedure is repeated three times and afterwards a coin is left in the water of the cross- base.
