Cross

Within a leacht (GA110-023005-) c. 80m S of Teampall Bhreacáin (GA110-010001-) at Na Seacht Teampaill, Inis Mór. Known as the South Cross, it survives as eight fragments cemented together in a horizontal position on a modern cement plinth. These formed part of a limestone cross (Wth 0.3m, T 0.15m) with an asymmetrical ringed head, which originally stood at least 1.95m in height. Decoration consists of knotwork and fret patterns. The South Cross at Inis Mór, known as the Cross of the Eoghanacht, was likely built by the Eoghanacht dynasty in the 8th or 9th century. It is a high cross of early Christian style, possibly dedicated to a saint, and is significant as a remnant of monastic activity in the Na Seacht Teampaill area.
