What is recorded here
A small Latin cross carved from Arodstown limestone now stands in a little garden beside St Mary's at Moynalvy, having traveled from its original churchyard to find a new home. Its faces hold a Crucifixion, a Virgin and Child, and Gothic letters cut into recessed panels, while a modern base supports the ancient shaft. The stone has survived the loss of its first setting, carrying memory across distance and time.
Situated in a little garden outside the Roman Catholic church of St Mary's at Moynalvy are the late medieval crosses from Arodstown church (ME043-015----) and Kilmore church (ME043-042----) (Moore 1975, 38-9, 46-7). The cross from Arodstown is described by King (1984, 104-05) as:
Found at Arodstown, but erected here in the 1960s. Mat: limestone. Dims: shaft: H 0.57m; span 0.65m; dims 0.21m x 0.15m)
A small Latin cross, rectangular in section, decorated on the N and S faces in relief and incision. There are expansions at the ends of the arms and upper shaft. The base is modern. S: Virgin and Child. The arms of the cross have recessed panels set into a cross-shaped recessed panels with (left) MAR and (right) HIS in Gothic and Roman lettering. N: A Crucifixion set into a cross-shaped recessed panel. The upper shaft has an INRI in relief while the arms have an incised P (Left) and M (right), all in Roman capitals. A late sixteenth-century date seems appropriate.
The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Meath' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1987). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research.
