Croincha is a small artificial island in Lough Ennell, County Westmeath, where kings of Meath held court and Maelsechlainn II died in 1022. Beneath the water, timber palisades from around AD 825 to 850 still stand in rings, while animal bones and stone landing walls mark the place where people lived, ate and arrived by boat. In 1446, Domnaill O'Coffey and his two sons were treacherously killed in their own guest-house on the island, and the mortared foundations near its centre may still trace that lost room.
