National monument No. 247. Crannóg known as 'Crock Island' is now located on partially reclaimed land on NW side of Lough Gur, 130m NW of the present shoreline of the lake. The water level of Lough Gur was lowered when the lake was drained shortly after the first edition OS 6-inch map around the late 1830s (Harkness 1869, 395). On the first edition OS 6-inch map the crannóg is shown standing on a W spur of the lake with Grange Hill to the N, Knockfennell to the NE and Ardaghlooda Hill to S. Garret Island stands in the centre of the lake 410m to SSE. On this map Crock Island lies 70m E of the shoreline. Two possible settlement platfroms (LI032-014002-/005-), a ringfort (LI032-014003-) and a field system (LI032-014003-) lie 260m to E. Garret island on which stands a castle (LI032-018----) lies 410m to SSE with a crannóg (LI032-021----) 540m to SSE. Grange church (LI032-008001-) and graveyard (LI032-008002-) lie 250m to W, and Lough Gur House stands 150m to N.
Crannóg described in 1978 as a circular shaped platform of earth and stone measuring 28m in diameter and now standing approximately 2m high above the surrounding land (O'Kelly and O'Kelly 1978, 42). According to O'Kelly (1944, 46) the foundation of the crannóg (diam. 90 feet/27m; H 6' 6"/2m) was formed by a circular platform of large stones which supported layers of brush-wood and earth. Today the outline of a tree and scrub-covered mound standing on poorly drained rushy land is visible on Digital Globe aerial photograph.
