Crannog is an artificial island built for human use, often with a dwelling, fence, or sanctuary at its centre. The name Crannog appears in several places in Ulster and Scotland, where lakes and bogs preserved wooden remains that record clever adaptation to wet country. Swan Island in Strand may have begun as a small island home, a seasonal hunting place, or a marker of boundary and belief. Water, reeds and memory have done the rest.
