Crannog is a man-made island in Knockgorm, County Down, built when people wanted dry ground surrounded by water. The official record preserves the name and point but leaves the builders unnamed. They may have stacked stones, soil and brush until the lake let go of its claim. That is still crannog work: taking back a little world from the drowned one.
The official Northern Ireland record identifies this as CRANNOG. Recorded period: E.CHRIST.. The official map point was placed at the centre of the recorded archaeological site from the source map reference.
