Crannog in Derryhoo (lower Loughtee By.)

Crannog

What is recorded here

Crannog in Derryhoo was a small square island ten metres from the shore in Drummany Lough, County Cavan, marked on Ordnance Survey maps in 1836 and 1876. The lake has since fallen enough to drown the crannog in marsh, erasing the water that once made it an island. Whatever lives or memories occupied that little square of land now sink into reeds and wet earth, forgotten but not gone.
Small island, roughly square in plan, in Drummany Lough, c. 10m from the shoreline. Marked on OS 1836 and 1876 eds. The level of the lake has fallen considerably with the result that the area of the island has become marshland. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Cavan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1995). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Date of upload/revision: 22 December 2008
