Cloonturk Lough in County Leitrim hides a crannog beneath water that rises and falls with the seasons. Wood-Martin claimed two artificial islands existed there in 1886, but nobody has pointed to either one since. The lake may have swallowed them entirely when it flooded beyond its ordinary oval shape. Someone built on that water, lived there, and disappeared so completely that even the number of homes became a rumor.

Cloonturk Lough is a small oval lake (dims c. 300m N-S; c. 180m E-W) in a low-lying basin. which can flood to its old extent (dims c. 600m N-S; c. 270m E-W) as represented on the 1835 edition of the OS 6-inch map, although. Wood-Martin (1886, 243) lists it as having two crannogs, but no supporting evidence is provided and this crannog remains unlocated. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of upload: 6 January 2020
