Green Island is a crannog in County Derry, an artificial island built for human life during the early Christian period. It remains a scheduled archaeological site, preserved against the kind of forgetting that erases small places. The island may have held a household, a workshop or a place of refuge, but no surviving detail confirms which. What is certain is that people shaped the land itself to keep dry, stable and separate from the water around it.
