What is recorded here

Castlecranna hid a ruined castle somewhere in its townland, perhaps beneath Cranna House or lost entirely to soil and time. The Civil Survey of 1654-6 called it walls out of repair, suggesting a place already abandoned when officials passed through. Whatever vanished there, the name still points to a castle nobody can now locate.

Unlocated castle within the townland of Castlecranna. Described in the Civil Survey (1654-6) as 'the Walls of a Castle out of repayre' (Simington 1934, vol. 2, 167). No visible remains of castle at Cranna House. It has been assumed that Cranna House was built on the site of the medieval castle but it is possible that the castle was located elsewhere within the townland.
