Cowdray Castle was built by Sir William Fitzwilliam in the early 16th century and later held by the Fitzwilliam family, who played a notable role in English politics and society. It is remembered as one of the great Tudor houses of Sussex and for its historical associations with the English Reformation and the development of country house architecture.
