Monsie Moon stands behind the kitchen pass, butter still on his gloves, listening to the woman describe rooms she has never entered. He knows the shape of her wanting because he has wanted the same thing: a place large enough for every living person it has ever held. The Courthouse in Carlow is missing, but it is not dead. It is waiting for someone strong enough to remember the rooms into existence.
