Cork 800 Memorial marks eight centuries of city charter, from 1185 to 1985. Dr Patrick J. Hillery unveiled the stone on 1 January 1985, turning a date into a public act of memory. The monument does not claim to solve every lost year; it anchors the city in its own continuity.
This stone was erected to celebrate the 800th anniversary of the grant of a charter to Cork City, 1185-1985. It was unveiled on 1 January 1985 by the President of Ireland Dr Patrick J. Hillery
