Coolkellure Lodge

Detached cruciform-plan three-bay two-storey former gate lodge, built 1879, with gabled breakfront central entrance bay to south, three-stage central tower to rear (north) and having bay windows to gables (east and west). Now in use as private house. Recent extensions to rear (north). Pitched sproketed slate roofs with rendered chimneystack, ceramic ridge cresting, cast-iron rainwater goods, sandstone corbels, carved gargoyle corbels, eaves courses (to bay windows) and timber bargeboards. Snecked limestone walls with sandstone quoins, string courses, plinth, blind crosses and gargoyles. Square-headed and pointed arch openings with one-over-one timber sliding sash and fixed pane windows having sandstone block-and-start chamfered surrounds. Round-headed and pointed arch openings to porch. Pointed arch door opening with timber battened door retaining ironmongery and sandstone block-and-start chamfered surround. Enclosed by limestone walls and piers with cast-iron railing.

Located at the entrance to Coolkellure Demesne, this extravagant gate lodge marks the beginning of an avenue towards Coolkellure House. This impressive and well-maintained structure displays a striking architectural style with extensive attention to detail, seen in the window surrounds and gargoyles in particular. This structure is an indication of the grandeur of the architectural style and design of the late Victorian Coolkellure House, which was commissioned by the Shuldham family and designed by Henry Hill.
