Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander was born in County Cork, Ireland, on 19 April 1909. He became a British cryptanalyst who led Hut 8 at Bletchley Park and later headed cryptanalysis at GCHQ for twenty-five years. He was also twice British chess champion and an International Master.
