Explorer TomCloverlands Model Car Museum packs a remarkable number of small vehicles into its home at Llanfair Caereinion railway station. Look from a model racing car to a bus or a tiny veteran motor and a century of road dreams seems to fit on a shelf. Tom says he asked for a test drive; the curator offered him a magnifying glass.
The collection began with Gillian Rogers, who received two model cars as a childhood gift and kept collecting. Other enthusiasts added models, and the museum now describes more than 8,000 pieces. It moved to the Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway's Llanfair station, beside a working heritage railway. Vehicles of different sizes and eras make this a history of design, sport and travel as much as a room full of toys. A 2026 building restoration was followed by the museum's announced reopening in May.
Pick one model and trace what its maker thought mattered: shape, colour, wheels or the driver's seat. Tom claims a miniature bus left without him because he was still arguing about the fare. The railway setting adds a second scale to the visit, with real rolling stock nearby. Give the smallest exhibits time; some stories are easier to miss when you hurry past the biggest model.
The museum says it normally opens at weekends, with occasional weekdays announced separately by its small volunteer team. Check its latest notice before travelling, particularly outside railway operating days. Cloverlands is an independent museum at the station, so confirm the museum visit rather than assuming a train ticket includes every door. The shelves prove that small things can carry big journeys.
