Cloney Castle

In an extensive farmyard, in which large outbuildings have been erected. In 1837, according to O’Conor who co-compiled the OSL (Herity 2002, 70 [206]), ‘… in Cloney townland, is an old Castle, retaining its roof, and attached to it, a house, occupied by – Kelly.’ No visible surface trace survives. Cloney Castle was built in the 17th century by the MacDonnell family, a prominent Gaelic-Irish clan in the area. It is remembered as a rare example of a well-preserved Irish tower house from that period.
