Crewe railway workers paid for the Queen's Park Clock Tower, unveiled with the park in 1888 as a gift from the town's defining employer and workforce.

Why it was made

Railway employees funded a public clock to mark the opening of the park given to Crewe by the London and North Western Railway.

People and events

Workers' subscriptions paid for the tower, whose medallions show Queen Victoria and senior railway company figures.

How it worked

Its clock served park visitors while its position at the north entrance announced the link between civic recreation and railway employment.

What remains

The sandstone-and-brick tower, clock faces, carved medallions and entrance setting remain as listed features.

Why it mattered

It matters because the monument records how one railway company and its workers shaped both employment and public life in Crewe.
