Clochan in Cill Éinne

This drystone-built and very heavily overgrown clochan came to light during the course of fieldwork on the AranLIFE Farming Project (2014-2018) (see www.aranlife.ie). It is located on a narrow steep-sided valley running N-S and is overlooked by higher plateaux to the E and W. Though collapsed, the surviving remains suggest that this was a substantial circular clochan (int. diam. 3.9m; max. extent including collapse 5.7m) with a possible annexe to its N. Traces of corbelling, four to six courses high (H 0.8m), are visible. The enclosing wall may originally have been up to 1.4m high at 2.6m in width. An arc of collapsed wall adjoining the clochan at S may be the remains of a second clochan. Compiled by: Olive Alcock Date of upload: 11 December 2018
