What is recorded here
Maulagowna holds a cliff-edge fort where a pointed promontory throws itself toward the valley of Lough Inchiquin, guarded on the landward side by a broad earthen bank. The precipice does the work of a wall, while the bank and shallow fosse keep intruders from reaching the small interior where boulders still poke through the ground. Whoever built it chose fear and spectacle, forcing visitors to climb toward a place that looks back over water and sky.
In rough pasture, on a NW-facing slope and at the edge of a precipice on the SE bank of a tributary of the Glaninchiquin River. There are extensive views over the valley of Lough Inchiquin. This cliff-edge fort is defined by a pointed promontory (30m NW-SE) which projects to the NW and by an arc (C 30m NE-SW) of an earthen bank NE-SW. The promontory is defined by steeply scarped sides (H c. 30m) at W and N. The earthen bank (Wth 6.3m; int. H 2.25m; ext. H 1.35m) is flat-topped and is revetted on the internal face with drystone facing (H 0.8m) NE-SE. There is an external fosse (Wth 1.7m) NE-SW which rises gently (H 1.25m) to the external ground level and a causewayed entrance (Wth 1.6m) at S. Small boulders protrude above the surface of the interior, which slopes down to the NW. A relict field boundary (KE101-072001-) lies c. 25m to the SE.
