What is recorded here
Cliff-edge fort in Lyre (duhallow By., Clonmeen Par.) stood on a north-facing cliff above the Glen River, using the sheer drop as one wall and earthen banks as the other. Gravel quarrying erased the visible fort, yet workers broke through into a hidden underground passage, proving the site still contained more than its ruined surface suggested. The loss is angular and human, but the discovery keeps the place alive beneath the scar.
On N-facing elevated site, overlooking Glen River to N. Depicted as hachured roughly circular enclosure (diam. c. 30m) on 1904 OS 6-inch map, defined by arc of two hachured banks SE->N and by straight-sided cliff face to NE above river valley; shown similarly on 1937 OS 6-inch map except for central enclosure which is shown as a platform. Gravel quarrying has destroyed site; no visible remains survive. 'Part of the bank, some of the ditch and a run of the counter-scarp bank on the uphill or south side...' was noted during investigation of Man-made underground passage (CO040-02702-) uncovered during quarrying (O'Kelly and Shee 1968, 46).
