Cliff-edge fort in Carragraigue stands on the eastern bank of Rathcool River, using a sheer western cliff as one wall and earthen banks as the other three. People built a defensible oval where the land itself became the barrier, forcing any attacker to climb or retreat. The causewayed gaps suggest controlled entry rather than careless construction, while the pasture above hides a place shaped by danger and decision.

Depicted as hachured circular enclosure on 1842 OS 6-inch map; as roughly circular bivallate enclosure defined on W side by straight cliff face on 1904 and 1937 OS 6-inch maps. Roughly oval area (40.5m N-S; 32.5m E-W) defined by two earthen banks (inner bank: int. H 1.1m; ext. H 2.85m; outer bank: H 0.5m) to N, E and S, with intervening fosse (D 2.05m) and shallow external fosse (D 0.5m); straight cliff edge to W. Causewayed entrance (Wth 3.1m) to ESE; causewayed break (Wth 1.5m) in bank to SSW. Interior grass-covered; slopes down to W.
