Clement Smyth was born in Finlea, County Clare, in 1810, the start of a life that crossed oceans and changed church history. He left that small Irish place to become a Trappist priest, found schools, helped build a new abbey in America, and later became the second bishop of Dubuque. The boy from Clare became a leader for others, carrying the discipline of his origins into new land.
