Cist

What is recorded here

On a gentle E-facing slope in an undulating landscape. A cairn (RO051-010002-) which was disturbed in land reclaimation during the 1950s revealed a long cist (dims. 1.65m N-S; 0.55m E-W; D 0.5m) defined by stone slabs with a slab floor. Fragments of a cremation and of a bowl Food Vessel were recovered in excavation by J. Raftery (Raftery1960-1; Waddell 1990, 130-1; O Riordain and Waddell 1993, 129). The cist is still visible. A Bronze Age cist tomb, likely 11th to 9th century BCE, representing a simple burial structure common in early Irish funerary practices. Its survival despite 20th-century land reclamation provides insight into prehistoric burial customs in the region.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
