Castlehyde holds a small rectangular cist discovered during ploughing in 1905. Day found a Food Vessel Vase inside, half filled with incinerated bones and ashes beside a fossil encrinite. The vessel wore whipped cord ornament and carried lugs on its shoulder, marking death and memory in clay.

Within Castle Hyde demesne (CO035-016---). Discovered during ploughing in 1905; investigated by Day (1905). Rectangular cist (3ft x 2.5ft; long axis N-S) 'lined throughout with flat slate-like stone' (ibid., 188); capstone dislodged by labourers. Cist contained Food Vessel Vase (Doody 1986, Cork No. 18; Waddell 1990, 60) which was half filled with incinerated bones and ashes, and a fossil encrinite. Day describes vessel (H 5in; max. circumference 1ft 7in) as having four lugs on shoulder, inscribed mouth. Illustration (Doody ibid., fig. 62) shows alternating bands of vertical inscribed lines and horizontal grooves or ribs; more elaborate basket-work-like pattern on shoulder; according to O Riordain and Waddell (1993, 94) 'decorated with impressed whipped cord ornament'. A rectangular stone cist, likely dating to the Early Christian or early medieval period, used for burial. Its construction and location within a historic demesne suggest possible associations with local elite or ecclesiastical activity.
