Cist in Calliagh

Cist

What is recorded here

A 'grave with a small wall around it and containing a lot of small bones was found…when digging for gravel on Logwood Hill…about a field away from the "giant's grave" in Calliagh townland' (IFC School's MSS (949), 94, 503: https://www.duchas.ie/en/cbes ), but it is not known which megalithic tomb (MO013-031----; MO013-032----) was intended. The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Monaghan' (Dublin: Stationery Office, 1986). In certain instances the entries have been revised and updated in the light of recent research. Compiled by: Michael Moore Date of revision: 23 February 2018
A small Neolithic or early Bronze Age cist tomb, likely dating to the 2nd millennium BCE. Its proximity to the "giant's grave" suggests a possible funerary or ritual landscape in the Calliagh area.

The monument record does not grant public access. Check the route and ask the landowner before entering private land.
