Church

What is recorded here

In the heart of the green countryside, a forgotten temple stands as a testament to resilience and faith. Its walls, once vibrant with life and prayer, now bear the marks of time, yet they continue to whisper stories of hope and devotion. Visitors are drawn not only by its architectural beauty but by the enduring spirit it embodies, reminding us that even in adversity, the human heart seeks light.
Described in OS Letters (O'Flanagan 1972, Vol. 1, 645) as 'a templeen' but named as 'Church' on 1st ed. of OS 6-inch map. It is marked thereon as a roofed rectangular building aligned E-W. All that now survives is its grassed-over outline (E-W; L 12m, Wth 6m) defined by a wall foundation (H 0.2-0,5m; Wth 0.8m) and partially shaded by a solitary chestnut tree. A gap towards W end of S wall may mark the position of the doorway. A small almost square enclosure (E-W 11.5m, N-S 11m) adjoins it on N side. This is defined by a low bank with a possible entrance at NW corner. According to local tradition, this church was in use until the early 19th C. This and its stratigraphical relationship with the enclosure (GA087-211004-) that lies to its NW hint that it may be a post-medieval foundation, possibly a pre-emancipation RC chapel, though the td. name might suggest otherwise. A CBG (GA087-211002-) and a series of earthworks (GA087-211003-) are associated. (ASGAP 171:10) The above description is derived from the published 'Archaeological Inventory of County Galway Vol. II - North Galway'.
